Dell (Force10) compatible 407-10942 Description
407-10942 is Dell Force10's 10GBASE-SR SFP+ transceiver SKU. The 407-xxxxx numbering predates the Dell/Force10 acquisition and targets Force10 S4810, S4820T, S4048-ON, S5048F and Z9000 switches under legacy FTOS, plus Dell Networking N4000 series and older Force10 MXL blade switch modules. After the 2016 Dell/EMC merger the inventory convention moved to the 407-BBxx series under the Dell EMC brand. The older 407-xxxxx parts and the newer 407-BBxx parts share the SR optical platform but carry different EEPROM coding, so verify EEPROM coding before substituting on a live fabric.
EdgeOptic's compatible 407-10942 carries the Force10-recognized vendor ID block, so FTOS port initialization on S4810 and S4820T brings the link up under the default SFP+ configuration, and show interface transceiver reports the expected Dell attribution. Line rate is 10.3125 Gbps per IEEE 802.3ae Clause 52. Optical build uses an 850 nm VCSEL transmitter, 850 nm PIN photodiode receiver and 6.1 dB minimum link budget. Reach is 300 m over OM3, 400 m over OM4, 82 m over OM2 and 33 m over OM1. The module is built to the SFP+ MSA (SFF-8432) mechanical and electrical reference with a duplex LC connector, and publishes SFF-8472 DDM/DOM (Tx power, Rx power, laser bias, temperature, supply voltage).
Typical deployment is short-reach ToR-to-leaf and leaf-to-spine uplinks on Force10 S4810 and S4820T chassis in a single data center hall where OM3 or OM4 multimode is already in place. The Z9000 and Z9100-ON spine platforms accept SR SFP+ only via QSFP28-to-4x10G breakout, and OS10-based Z9100-ON deployments typically prefer a matching 407-BBxx reference. Commercial operating range is 0 to 70 degrees Celsius. For brownfield FTOS monitoring scripts that parse show interface transceiver output, the EdgeOptic module preserves the standard Dell vendor fields, so SNMP and NMS polling paths continue to work. For mixed deployments that pair legacy FTOS chassis with modern OS10 S-series ON switches and need a matching 407-BBxx SKU for the OS10 side, please contact our sales team to align the right part number per chassis.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Force10 switches accept 407-10942?
407-10942 is coded for Force10 S4810, S4820T, S4048-ON, S5048F and Z9000 switches under legacy FTOS, plus Dell Networking N4000 series switches and older Force10 MXL blade switch modules. Z9100-ON spine platforms accept SR SFP+ via QSFP28-to-4x10G breakout only.
Is 407-10942 the same optic as the newer Dell EMC 407-BBxx 10GBASE-SR SFP+?
Optically both references are 10GBASE-SR SFP+ at 300 m over OM3. The EEPROM differs: 407-10942 carries pre-merger Force10 programming for FTOS, while 407-BBxx parts are programmed for OS10 on Dell EMC chassis. For legacy FTOS hosts, 407-10942 is the correct reference.
Does 407-10942 publish DDM readings under FTOS?
Yes. SFF-8472 diagnostic readings (Tx/Rx power, laser bias, module temperature and supply voltage) are available under show interface transceiver on FTOS-managed S4810, S4820T and related chassis.
