EdgeOptic's SFP-10G-USR compatible is the 10GBASE-SR SFP+ upgrade alternative for the legacy Dell Force10 SFP-10G-USR 10GBASE-USR module. The original SFP-10G-USR is a 10 Gbps Ultra Short Reach SFP+ rated to 100 m on OM3 multimode fiber, originally catalogued under the Force10 brand and now associated with the Dell PowerSwitch portfolio after the 2011 Dell acquisition of Force10 Networks. The optic was intended for short intra-rack links on Dell Force10 data center switches.
The EdgeOptic 10GBASE-SR SFP+ replacement shares the same SFP+ cage, LC duplex interface, and 850 nm VCSEL transmitter as the original USR, and extends the reach envelope to 300 m on OM3 and 400 m on OM4 multimode fiber, a full superset of the original 100 m USR specification. The replacement is built to IEEE 802.3ae 10GBASE-SR with a 6.1 dB optical budget, transmit power between −5 and 0 dBm, and receive sensitivity better than −11.1 dBm. The SFP+ host cage on Dell PowerSwitch and Dell Force10 platforms that previously accepted the SFP-10G-USR ordering code is the same physical interface, so no cage migration is required.
Dell-recognized EEPROM coding identifies the module under the ordering code that the host expects, so the SFP+ registers cleanly on Dell PowerSwitch platforms that previously accepted the SFP-10G-USR. Digital diagnostics per SFF-8472 reports temperature, supply voltage, transmit bias current, transmit power, and receive power on every read. The EdgeOptic SR replacement is governed by IEEE 802.3ae Clause 52 for 10GBASE-SR multimode operation, and SFF-8431 governs the SFP+ electrical and mechanical interface.
