Dell (Force10) compatible SFP-8GFC-SW Description

EdgeOptic's SFP-8GFC-SW compatible is a Dell-coded 8G Fibre Channel SW version of the EdgeOptic 10G-SFP-300 multi-rate SFP+ transceiver. The module is built to the INCITS 450-2008 FC-PI-4 short-wavelength specification at 8.5 Gbps signaling and is recognized by Dell platforms without third-party-transceiver flags, making it a direct replacement for the original Dell EMC 8GFC SWL SFP+ shipped with PowerEdge Fibre Channel HBAs and Dell SAN storage controllers.

The optic is 850 nm VCSEL based with a duplex LC interface and runs at 8.5 Gbps for 8GFC. Reach is 150 m over OM4 multimode fiber per the Dell EMC Networking optics specification, with shorter reach on lower-grade fiber (50 m OM2, 21 m OM1) per the FC-PI-4 Table 16 distance budget. The module supports the FC-PI-4 multi-rate envelope, operating at 1G, 2G, 4G, and 8G Fibre Channel rates (1.0625, 2.125, 4.25, and 8.5 Gbps) auto-negotiated by the host port. Digital diagnostics monitoring per SFF-8472 reports temperature, supply voltage, TX bias current, transmit power, and receive power on every read.

The SFP-8GFC-SW is ordered for Dell PowerEdge servers fitted with 8GFC Fibre Channel HBAs and Dell EMC storage arrays with 8GFC SAN connectivity. Verify the specific HBA generation, controller-firmware release, and switch port model against the Dell support matrix before deployment, particularly for mixed-generation SAN fabrics where 4G or 8G auto-negotiation behavior depends on the upstream switch side. The IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standards do not apply to this Fibre Channel optic. Capacity, signaling rate, optical budget, and reach are governed entirely by the FC-PI-4 specification, and engineers planning a fabric should refer to FC-PI-4 Table 16 for the OM2 and OM3 reach budgets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the SFP-8GFC-SW work in both Dell PowerEdge FC HBA slots and Dell storage array SFP+ ports?

Yes, both deployment sides accept the SFP-8GFC-SW when the host port is an 8GFC SFP+ slot. Dell uses the same FC-PI-4 SWL optic across HBA and array sides of the SAN fabric. Confirm the specific PowerEdge HBA model and the storage array generation against the Dell support matrix, since older 4GFC slots will negotiate down to 4G and pre-8GFC array controllers will not accept this module.
