Fujitsu compatible FIM37000/172 Description

EdgeOptic's FIM37000/172 compatible is a Fujitsu-coded 100GBASE-ZR4 QSFP28, the standard-power member of the FIM37000 family rated for 80 km on single-mode fiber. TX output is +2.5 dBm OMA per lane, 30 dB optical link budget, and the module is built for the same 4-channel LAN-WDM grid as every ZR4.

The /172 sits next to the /173 in Fujitsu's catalog. Same QSFP28 form factor, same wavelength plan, same receiver, same 5.5 W draw at 3.3 V, same 80 km rating. The only difference is TX output: /172 transmits at +2.5 dBm OMA; /173 at +3.5 dBm OMA. Pick /173 when the link has tight budget margin or extra splice/connector loss; /172 covers the standard 80 km span without overdriving.

Four LAN-WDM channels at 1295.56, 1300.05, 1304.58, and 1309.14 nm, 25.78 Gbps each lane, 103.125 Gbps aggregate over two single-mode fibers (TX and RX) on an LC duplex connector. Cooled EML transmitters, SOA + PIN photodetector array, receiver sensitivity better than -28 dBm with overload at -5.5 dBm. NRZ direct-detection, DOM via the standard QSFP28 I2C interface. 100GBASE-ZR4 is MSA-extended from IEEE 802.3ba LR4 to reach 80 km.

Host RS-FEC is mandatory. ZR4 relies on RS(528,514) per IEEE 802.3 Clause 91 to close the link at 80 km; the module carries no internal FEC. Both ends must have RS-FEC enabled, otherwise the link will not stabilise. Default RS mode is correct on most modern 100G ZR4 host ports, but verify it during commissioning.

FIM37000/172 was designed by Fujitsu Optical Components for FLASHWAVE transport equipment and shares a common platform design with the Fujitsu 100G QSFP28 ER4 module, so FLASHWAVE operators can re-use the same chassis slot when upgrading from 40 km ER4 to 80 km ZR4. The two modules are not drop-in equivalents on the wire: ZR4 mandates host RS-FEC at 80 km and draws 5.5 W; ER4 does not require host RS-FEC at its 40 km reach and runs at a lower power draw. Verify host configuration before swapping.

Operating temperature 0 to +70 °C commercial grade, 3.3 V single supply. For short spans under about 15 km the receiver can saturate; insert a 12 dB LC inline attenuator on the receive side. Sibling Cisco QSFP-100G-ZR4-S and Arista QSFP-100G-ZR4 compatibles cover the same 80 km LAN-WDM ZR4 standard with vendor-coded EEPROM for those host platforms.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Fujitsu FIM37000/172 and FIM37000/173?

TX output power. The /172 transmits at +2.5 dBm OMA per lane; the /173 transmits at +3.5 dBm OMA. Both are 100GBASE-ZR4 QSFP28 modules rated for 80 km on G.652 single-mode fiber, both share the same LAN-WDM wavelength plan, the same SOA + PIN receiver, and the same 5.5 W power envelope. The /173 buys an extra 1 dB of TX margin for spans with aged fiber, additional splices, or cascaded patch panels; the /172 covers a standard 80 km link without driving the receiver toward overload on shorter runs.

Can the FIM37000/172 replace a Fujitsu 100G ER4 module in the same chassis slot?

Physically yes, operationally not as a drop-in. Fujitsu Optical Components designed the FIM37000 ZR4 family on a common platform with the Fujitsu 100G QSFP28 ER4, so the modules occupy the same QSFP28 slot. The two are not interchangeable on the wire: ZR4 requires host RS-FEC (RS(528,514) per IEEE 802.3 Clause 91) and the link will not come up if the host port is configured for ER4-style operation. Confirm the host port is configured for 100GBASE-ZR4 with RS-FEC enabled before swapping.
