Fujitsu compatible FIM37000/172 Description
FIM37000/172 is Fujitsu Optical Components' standard-power 100GBASE-ZR4 QSFP28, rated for 80 km on single-mode fiber. TX output is +2.5 dBm OMA. For routes that need more headroom, the /173 variant delivers +3.5 dBm — but for most 80 km links with well-maintained fiber, the /172 provides sufficient margin. EdgeOptic's compatible matches the original specs and operates on Fujitsu equipment and multi-vendor platforms.
Same QSFP28 form factor, same wavelengths, same receiver, same 5.5 W, same 80 km rating. Only difference: the /172 transmits at +2.5 dBm OMA while the /173 reaches +3.5 dBm. For most links where the fiber plant sits comfortably inside the 30 dB budget, the /172 is the appropriate choice. Step up to the /173 only for high splice counts, degraded connectors, or routes pushing the budget limit.
Four LAN WDM channels — 1295.56, 1300.05, 1304.58, 1309.14 nm — 25G each, 103.125 Gbps total. Dual-rate: 100GbE and OTU4 at 111.8 Gbps for carrier OTN deployments requiring performance monitoring and fault management at the transport layer. EML transmitters with PIN+SOA receivers. Sensitivity better than -26.9 dBm, 30 dB link budget on G.652. LC duplex, QSFP28 MSA, 5.5 W. CE/RoHS certified, commercial temp 0-70 °C. EML lasers include integrated TEC cooling for wavelength stability.
RS-FEC (RS-528,514) on the host — mandatory. No internal FEC in the module. Both ends need matching settings. Short runs under about 15 km require a 12 dB LC attenuator to avoid overdriving the receiver. Also note: ZR4 cannot interoperate with LR4 at the far end. Different transmitter architecture, different FEC. Both sides must be ZR4.
Originally built for Fujitsu FLASHWAVE equipment. It shares a platform design with Fujitsu's 100G ER4 module, but the differences matter: ZR4 requires host RS-FEC (ER4 doesn't) and draws 5.5 W versus ER4's 3.5 W. When swapping from ER4, reconfigure FEC and verify slot power capacity. EdgeOptic's compatible is coded for multi-vendor use — any QSFP28 platform supporting ZR4 with RS-FEC. DOM readings (TX/RX power, temp, voltage) display normally via I2C.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Fujitsu FIM37000/172 and FIM37000/173?
TX power: /172 is +2.5 dBm OMA (standard), /173 is +3.5 dBm OMA (high power). For most 80 km runs on modern G.652 fiber, the /172 has sufficient margin. The /173 is only necessary when the link budget shows standard power doesn't cover the total loss. Same form factor, same 5.5 W draw on both.
Does the FIM37000/172 support OTU4 in addition to 100G Ethernet?
Yes — dual-rate: 100GbE at 103.125 Gbps and OTU4 at 111.8 Gbps. Both the /172 and /173 support OTU4, so the choice between them is purely about TX power, not protocol support. OTU4 is primarily used in carrier transport environments requiring OTN framing for performance monitoring and fault management.
Can the FIM37000/172 replace a Fujitsu 100G ER4 module?
Yes, same QSFP28 slot. For most ER4 replacements, the /172's standard power is sufficient — 30 dB covers typical 80 km fiber. Two configuration changes required: enable RS-FEC on the host port (ER4 doesn't need it, ZR4 does), and confirm the slot handles 5.5 W instead of ER4's 3.5 W.
