845970-B21 HPE Compatible QSFP28 to SFP28 Adapter

EdgeOptic's 845970-B21 compatible is a HPE-coded version of the EdgeOptic QSFP28-SFP28-CONV QSFP28 to SFP28 adapter. It converts a single QSFP28 host port into one SFP28 cage, letting an SFP28 module, an SFP+ module, an SFP module, or an SFP cable populate a port that would otherwise require a QSFP28 module. The adapter uses a single lane of the QSFP28 host port for the inserted media, so the host dedicates that one lane to the lower speed link. Supported data rates span 10.31 to 25.78 Gbps, covering 10G Ethernet at 10.31 Gbps and 25G Ethernet at 25.78 Gbps on the inserted module. This is a common step in phased switch upgrades: when new switching hardware ships with QSFP28 uplinks but the far end of a link still runs SFP28, SFP+, or SFP media, the adapter lets that older module plug directly into the new QSFP28 port instead of requiring an immediate replacement on both ends.

HPE's own support documentation for the 845970-B21 lists it as used to host SFP28 transceivers, SFP+ transceivers, SFP transceivers, and SFP cables in a QSFP28 port. DDM/DOM readout passes through from the inserted module, so power and diagnostic monitoring on the SFP28 or SFP+ side is unaffected by the adapter itself. The adapter provides no forward error correction of its own; FEC is handled by the host port and the inserted module, not by the adapter. It runs on a single 3.3V supply with a maximum power draw of 0.3W and is rated for an extended operating range of -20C to 85C. It is built to the QSFP28 MSA and SFP28 MSA form factor specifications and the SFF-8431 electrical interface, and it carries CE and RoHS marking.

Unlike a 4-channel QSFP28 breakout that fans one QSFP28 port out to multiple SFP28 links, this adapter presents a single SFP28 cage driven by one QSFP28 host lane; the port's other lanes are not used by this adapter.
