HP compatible AJ716A Description

AJ716A is HPE's part number for an 8Gb Fibre Channel shortwave SFP+ transceiver in the B-series (Brocade-branded) line. This is the B-series equivalent of the H-series AJ718A and sits between the 4G AJ715A and later 16G offerings such as QK724A. It's used in HPE StoreFabric B-series SAN switches rebadged from Brocade DS/5100, 300, 6505, and similar Gen5/Gen6 fabric platforms.

Fibre Channel reach is rate-dependent under FC-PI-4. At 8GFC (8.5 Gbps line rate), the minimum reach on OM3 multimode is approximately 150 m; OM4 extends this to around 190 m. At 4GFC the same module reaches about 380 m on OM3, and at 2GFC roughly 500 m. The transmitter is an 850 nm VCSEL with a receiver sensitivity better than the FC-PI-4 shortwave specification, delivering an 8.0 dB minimum optical budget suitable for typical fabric wiring inside a data center row.

SAN fabric operators should verify both ends of each link during commissioning: Brocade Fabric OS and HPE Fabric OS report per-port optical diagnostics via sfpShow and sfpShow -dom, with per-lane Tx/Rx power, laser bias, and temperature readings refreshed on polling. RAS logs flag threshold exceedances that correlate directly to the SFF-8472 alarm and warning registers in the module EEPROM. The AJ716A is backward-compatible with 4GFC and 2GFC, but not forward-compatible with 16GFC fabrics — swap for QK724A or later for 16G line rates.

EdgeOptic's compatible AJ716A is built on the 10GFC-SFP-300 platform. The EEPROM is programmed with HPE/Brocade-recognized vendor and part-number fields, so Fabric OS sfpShow output identifies the module correctly and doesn't trigger unqualified-SFP warnings in the fabric watch logs. MAPS policy actions such as moving ports to quarantine on optics-fault triggers operate on the same SFF-8472 alarm states populated by this module. Brocade Fabric OS EEPROM acceptance is confirmed before shipping. Refer to the EdgeOptic 10GFC-SFP-300 generic datasheet for full parametric detail including per-rate receiver sensitivity and transmitter eye mask margin.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between AJ716A, AJ718A, and AJ715A?

AJ716A is the 8GFC B-series (Brocade) shortwave SFP+, AJ718A is the 8GFC H-series (HPE FlexFabric/Virtual Connect) equivalent, and AJ715A is the 4GFC B-series predecessor. Optically AJ716A and AJ718A are similar 8GFC modules, but their EEPROM vendor data differs, so installing an AJ718A into a B-series fabric (or vice versa) can produce unqualified-optic warnings in FOS or HPE Flex-10 logs.

Will AJ716A work in a 16GFC-capable Brocade DS-6510 or DS-6520?

The SFP+ slot itself accepts the AJ716A, but the port will auto-negotiate down to 8GFC max. For 16GFC line rates on these platforms use the 16G shortwave SFP+ (QK724A / Brocade XBR-000192). Mixing 8G and 16G modules across a fabric is supported; each port negotiates independently.

Does sfpShow identify the compatible AJ716A correctly on Brocade Fabric OS?

Yes. The EEPROM is coded with HPE/Brocade-recognized vendor and part-number fields, so sfpShow and sfpShow -dom return the expected identifiers along with live DDM readings. Fabric Watch and MAPS policies process thresholds from this module the same way they do OEM units.
