Intel compatible C3N53AA Description
C3N53AA is an Intel 10GBASE-SR SFP+ transceiver shipped as a service or FRU part number with Intel Ethernet Network Adapter kits. The EdgeOptic compatible carries Intel-recognized EEPROM so X520, X710 and E810-based NICs accept the optic under stock ixgbe, i40e and ice driver stacks without the allow_unsupported_sfp module parameter. Qualified host platforms include Intel X520-DA2 and X520-SR2 dual-port 10GbE adapters, X710-DA2 and X710-DA4 10GbE SFP+ adapters, and E810-XXVDA2 dual-port 25GbE SFP28 adapters that back-rate to 10.3125 Gbps when paired with an SFP+ optic.
Protocol is IEEE 802.3ae Clause 52 10GBASE-SR at a fixed 10.3125 Gbps line rate. Maximum reach over OM3 multimode is 300 m at the 6.1 dB minimum link budget; OM4 extends this to 400 m, and legacy OM2 and OM1 plant supports 82 m and 33 m respectively. Earlier marketing copy that lists 400 m as the total reach conflates the OM4 figure with the primary OM3 specification. Intel X540 and X550 are 10GBASE-T copper NICs with RJ45 cages; they have no SFP+ cage and will not accept C3N53AA. Optical build uses an 850 nm VCSEL transmitter and 850 nm PIN photodiode receiver, duplex LC connector and SFP+ MSA (SFF-8432) mechanical envelope. SFF-8472 DDM/DOM publishes Tx power, Rx power, laser bias, temperature and supply voltage.
DDM readings are exposed through ethtool -m on Linux hosts running ixgbe, i40e or ice drivers, and through Intel PROSet on Windows, so NIC-side optical telemetry in existing fleet monitoring scripts continues to work unchanged. Typical deployment is server-to-ToR 10GbE uplinks inside a single data center hall over pre-installed OM3 or OM4 trunks, virtualization hosts with X710-DA2 adapters connecting to converged 10G/25G fabric switches, and E810-XXVDA2 hosts that run at 10G during transitional 10G-to-25G upgrades. Commercial operating range is 0 to 70 degrees Celsius. For lot-level Intel firmware qualification against specific X710 PBA revisions or fleet planning across mixed X520 and X710 estates, please contact our sales team with the host adapter inventory list.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the correct maximum reach for C3N53AA over OM3 multimode?
Maximum reach over OM3 is 300 m at the 10GBASE-SR IEEE 802.3ae Clause 52 link budget of 4.6 dB. OM4 extends reach to 400 m, and legacy OM2 and OM1 plant supports 82 m and 33 m.
Will C3N53AA work on X520, X710 and E810 without allow_unsupported_sfp?
Yes. The EEPROM carries the Intel-recognized vendor ID block, so ixgbe, i40e and ice drivers accept the optic under stock configuration. E810-XXVDA2 is a 25G SFP28 adapter and back-rates to 10.3125 Gbps when an SFP+ optic is inserted.
Can C3N53AA be used on Intel X540 or X550 adapters?
No. X540 and X550 are 10GBASE-T copper NICs with RJ45 cages. They have no SFP+ cage and do not accept any SFP+ module. For Intel SFP+ hosts, use X520, X710 or E810-XXVDA2 adapters.
