Qlogic compatible AFBR-703SMZ-QL Description

AFBR-703SMZ-QL is the QLogic-coded variant of the Avago / Broadcom AFBR-703SMZ 10GBASE-SR SFP+ module. The AFBR-703xMx family is the Avago enterprise 10G SR optical module line, and the -QL suffix indicates the QLogic vendor ID block programmed into EEPROM. The EdgeOptic compatible carries the same QLogic-recognized EEPROM, so the host adapter reports the optic with its expected QLogic attribution and passes the stock qualified-optic check. Host platforms include QLogic QLE3242, QLE3442, QLE8242 and QLE8262 10GbE converged network adapters on HPE, Dell and IBM servers and storage hosts, as well as QLogic FastLinQ QL41000-series adapters and QL45000-series adapters that carry 10GbE SFP+ cages. QL45000 SKUs with SFP28 or QSFP28 cages are a different form factor and are not in scope for this SFP+ optic.

Protocol is IEEE 802.3ae Clause 52 10GBASE-SR at a fixed 10.3125 Gbps line rate. Optical build uses an 850 nm VCSEL transmitter, 850 nm PIN photodiode receiver and 6.1 dB minimum link budget. Reach is 300 m over OM3 and 400 m over OM4, with 82 m over OM2 and 33 m over OM1 on legacy multimode plant. The module is built to the SFP+ MSA (SFF-8432) mechanical envelope with a duplex LC connector. SFF-8472 DDM/DOM publishes Tx power, Rx power, laser bias, module temperature and supply voltage, readable on Linux hosts through the standard ethtool -m interface on the QLogic network adapter.

On QLogic CNAs, FCoE and iSCSI storage traffic can share the 10GbE link with standard Ethernet, but the optic itself is a pure 10GBASE-SR Ethernet part and does not implement a Fibre Channel physical layer. Typical deployment is server-to-ToR uplinks from QLE32xx, QLE82xx or FastLinQ adapters on HPE ProLiant, Dell PowerEdge and IBM System x hosts into converged data center fabrics, over pre-installed OM3 or OM4 multimode trunks inside a single hall. Commercial operating range is 0 to 70 degrees Celsius. For fleet-scale HPE, Dell or IBM server refreshes that need matched QLogic-coded optics across a mixed QLE and FastLinQ estate, please contact our sales team with the host adapter inventory list. Orders spanning multiple adapter generations receive matched EEPROM programming per adapter family. QLE32xx, QLE82xx and FastLinQ 10GbE SFP+ hosts each accept their intended optic under stock firmware.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which QLogic adapters accept AFBR-703SMZ-QL?

AFBR-703SMZ-QL is coded for QLogic QLE3242, QLE3442, QLE8242 and QLE8262 10GbE converged network adapters on HPE, Dell and IBM hosts, and for QLogic FastLinQ QL41000-series and QL45000-series 10GbE SFP+ adapters. QL45000 SKUs with SFP28 or QSFP28 cages are a different form factor and are not in scope. The EEPROM carries the QLogic vendor ID so the adapter reports the optic with its expected attribution.

Can AFBR-703SMZ-QL carry Fibre Channel traffic on a QLogic CNA?

No. The optic is a 10GBASE-SR Ethernet transceiver and does not implement a Fibre Channel physical layer. On QLogic CNAs, FCoE and iSCSI share the 10GbE Ethernet link with standard data traffic, but the module itself remains a pure Ethernet optic.

How does the -QL suffix differ from the generic AFBR-703SMZ part number?

Both variants share the Avago / Broadcom AFBR-703xMx optical build. The -QL suffix indicates the QLogic vendor ID block is programmed into EEPROM, so QLogic adapters accept the module under stock firmware. The generic AFBR-703SMZ carries a different EEPROM profile aimed at other host vendors.
