100G BiDi QSFP28 ER1 30km Transceiver (Side A) Description

The BIDI-100G-Q28-SL40A is the Side A module of a 100G BiDi QSFP28 ER1 matched pair, running 100G Ethernet PAM4 at 106.25 Gbps over a single strand of single-mode fiber through one LC/UPC connector. It supports 100G Ethernet only, with no Fibre Channel or OTN framing.

An EML laser transmits at 1304.58 nm and a PIN photodiode receives at 1309.14 nm, with CDR and DSP-integrated FEC on the link.

A 14.7 dB average link budget supports the 30 km reach defined by the 100G Lambda MSA's 100G-ER1-30 single-lambda BiDi specification, with actual distance depending on fiber quality and connector loss.

The module is a hot-pluggable QSFP28 form factor with a CAUI-4 host electrical interface per IEEE 802.3cu, managed per SFF-8636 and SFF-8679, and compatible with standard QSFP28 host systems that support CAUI-4.

DDM and DOM report transmit power of 0 to 5.6 dBm per lane, extinction ratio of 5 dB minimum, and receive sensitivity of -14.7 to -3.4 dBm per lane with -2.4 dBm receiver overload. Operating range is 0 to 70 C, storage -40 to 85 C, at up to 4.5W on a single 3.3V supply. The module carries CE and RoHS marking.

This Side A module must be paired with Side B, BIDI-100G-Q28-SL40B. Side A transmits at 1304.58 nm and receives at 1309.14 nm; Side B mirrors this with a 1309.14 nm transmitter and a 1304.58 nm receiver. Two Side A or two Side B modules on the same link will not connect.

Typical deployments include metro backbone segments, carrier interconnect links, and extended-reach connections where single-fiber operation reduces fiber count against a duplex LC 100G optic.

Backed by 15+ years of EdgeOptic compatibility engineering across vendor optical platforms, this module ships with a lifetime warranty. For project-quantity pricing or the matching Side B module, contact our sales team.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which module pairs with the BIDI-100G-Q28-SL40A?

Side B, BIDI-100G-Q28-SL40B, is the required pair. Side B transmits at 1309.14 nm and receives at 1304.58 nm, the mirror of this module's 1304.58 nm transmitter and 1309.14 nm receiver.

What standard governs the 30 km reach of this BiDi ER1 module?

The 30 km reach follows the 100G Lambda MSA's 100G-ER1-30 single-lambda BiDi specification. IEEE 802.3cu covers the host PAM4 electrical interface for single-lambda 100G optics; it does not define this 30 km reach class.

How does this 30 km ER1 pair differ from EdgeOptic's 40 km ER1 pair?

The two pairs share the same QSFP28 form factor and BiDi wavelength plan family. This pair carries a 14.7 dB average link budget for 30 km; the 40 km ER1 pair (BIDI-100G-Q28-SL42A/B) is a separate part number with its own, correspondingly higher link budget. Confirm the reach-specific part numbers before ordering so a 30 km module is not paired against a 40 km one.

Does this module need host-side FEC enabled for the 30 km link?

FEC is integrated in the module's DSP. Because the module already performs this correction, host-side FEC should generally stay disabled on the switch port to avoid double-correction; some platforms auto-detect the module and disable host FEC automatically. Confirm the port's FEC setting against the platform's optics configuration guide.
