100G BiDi QSFP28 ER1 30km Transceiver (Side B) Description

BIDI-100G-Q28-SL40B is the Side B module of EdgeOptic's 100G BiDi QSFP28 ER1 30km matched pair: a single fiber bidirectional QSFP28 transceiver with a single LC/UPC connector, supporting 100G Ethernet PAM4 at 106.25 Gbps only.

Side B transmits at 1309.14 nm and receives at 1304.58 nm, the mirror of Side A's 1304.58 nm transmit and 1309.14 nm receive wavelengths. The transmitter is an EML laser, the receiver a PIN photodiode, with CDR supported on both paths.

An average link budget of 14.7 dB supports up to 30 km on single mode fiber. This ER1 30 km single lambda BiDi reach class comes from the 100G Lambda MSA's 100G-ER1-30 spec, not IEEE 802.3cu, which covers the host PAM4 electrical interface and the shorter FR1 and LR1 PMDs. Actual reach depends on fiber path loss, connector loss and splice loss; verify the measured link loss against the budget before installation.

The module is hot pluggable with a CAUI-4 electrical interface per IEEE 802.3cu, compatible with standard QSFP28 host systems that support CAUI-4. DDM and DOM per SFF-8636 report transmit power, receive power, bias current and module temperature in real time, and FEC is integrated in the DSP.

Average launch power spans 0 to 5.6 dBm per lane, with a minimum extinction ratio of 5 dB and average receiver sensitivity from -14.7 to -3.4 dBm per lane. The module operates across 0°C to 70°C with a -40°C to 85°C storage range, draws a maximum of 4.5 W from a single 3.3V supply, and carries CE and RoHS marking plus SFF-8636 and SFF-8679 compliance.

This Side B module must pair with EdgeOptic's Side A module, BIDI-100G-Q28-SL40A, which transmits at 1304.58 nm and receives at 1309.14 nm, the exact mirror of this module's wavelengths. Two Side B modules on the same link will not establish a connection; each end of the link needs one Side A module and one Side B module installed in the correct position.

Typical deployments include metro backbone links, carrier interconnects, and extended reach connections using a single fiber strand instead of a duplex pair. Backed by 15+ years of EdgeOptic compatibility engineering across vendor optical platforms, the module ships with a lifetime warranty. Frequently Asked Questions

Which module pairs with the BIDI-100G-Q28-SL40B?

The BIDI-100G-Q28-SL40B pairs with EdgeOptic's BIDI-100G-Q28-SL40A. Side A transmits at 1304.58 nm and receives at 1309.14 nm, the exact mirror of this Side B module's 1309.14 nm transmit and 1304.58 nm receive wavelengths. Two Side B modules, or two Side A modules, on the same link will not establish a connection.

What standard defines the 30 km reach of this ER1 BiDi module?

The 30 km reach comes from the 100G Lambda MSA's 100G-ER1-30 specification, not IEEE 802.3cu. IEEE 802.3cu defines the host PAM4 electrical interface (CAUI-4) along with the shorter FR1 and LR1 single lambda PMDs; the 100G Lambda MSA governs the ER1 BiDi optical specification and reach class used here.

How does this Side B module differ from EdgeOptic's 40 km ER1 pair (BIDI-100G-Q28-SL42A/B)?

The BIDI-100G-Q28-SL40B is rated for 30 km with a 14.7 dB average link budget, while the BIDI-100G-Q28-SL42A/B pair is built for a 40 km reach class with a correspondingly higher link budget. Both pairs share the same QSFP28 form factor and single LC/UPC BiDi wavelength plan; verify the link budget against the deployment's measured fiber path loss before choosing between the two reach classes.

Can Side A and Side B be identified by wavelength alone?

Yes. Side A transmits at 1304.58 nm and receives at 1309.14 nm, while Side B, this module, transmits at 1309.14 nm and receives at 1304.58 nm. Checking the transmit wavelength on the module label or in the DDM readout confirms which side is installed at each end of the link.
