SCMD-4B: Configurable 4-Channel Single Fiber CWDM Mux/Demux

SCMD-4B is EDGE's manufactured 4-channel single fiber CWDM mux/demux module built to ITU-T G.694.2 with 20 nm channel spacing. As a BiDi design, it carries 4 duplex data streams over 8 CWDM wavelengths on a single fiber, using CCWDM free-space filter technology, and requires no electrical power or active cooling. SCMD-4B ships as a configurable build. Buyers select one of three wavelength bands (1271 to 1411 nm, 1391 to 1531 nm or 1471 to 1611 nm), one of three housings (mini-LGX, LGX or 19-inch 1U), and can add an optional 1310 nm monitor port. An EXP expansion port is included on every build. As a passive device, SCMD-4B adds no signal processing and is transparent to the protocol carried on each stream, so it fits standard CWDM deployments regardless of the protocol used.

4 Data Channels Single Fiber Passive CWDM Mux/Demux Description

SCMD-4B is EDGE's 4-channel single fiber BiDi CWDM mux/demux module, built to ITU-T G.694.2 with 20 nm channel spacing. It carries 4 duplex data streams over 8 CWDM wavelengths on a single fiber through LC/UPC connectors, with 1.5 dB passband insertion loss. Filtering uses CCWDM (Compact CWDM) free space filter technology.

SCMD-4B ships as a configurable build across 15 combinations. Buyers select one of three wavelength bands (1271 to 1411 nm, 1391 to 1531 nm or 1471 to 1611 nm), one of three housings (mini-LGX, LGX or 19-inch 1U Type), and can add an optional 1310 nm monitor port. An EXP expansion port is included on every build, with no option to omit it.

As a passive device, SCMD-4B requires no electrical power and performs no signal processing. It is transparent to the protocol carried on each data stream, so it fits standard CWDM deployments regardless of the protocol running over the fiber. Passband ripple is 0.3 dB, polarization dependent loss is 0.2 dB and polarization mode dispersion is 0.1 ps.

SCMD-4A and SCMD-4B form the matched Side A and Side B pair for a single CWDM link. Both modules are configurable across the same three wavelength bands, so the SCMD-4A unit at one end and the SCMD-4B unit at the other end must be ordered with matching wavelength bands to establish the link.

The optional 1310 nm monitor port taps 1 percent of the signal at 23 dB insertion loss, letting a power meter or optical monitoring instrument check link power without breaking the main data path. The monitor port is optional, and SCMD-4B operates normally without it.

Confirm the wavelength band, housing and monitor port option against the far end unit and the CWDM transceivers on the link before ordering. For project quantities or configuration questions, contact our sales team.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if the wavelength bands on each end of a CWDM link do not match?

If the SCMD-4A and SCMD-4B units at opposite ends of the link are built for different wavelength bands, the CWDM channels will not line up and the link will not pass traffic correctly. Confirm that both ends are ordered with the same wavelength band, 1271 to 1411 nm, 1391 to 1531 nm or 1471 to 1611 nm, before deployment.

Does the transceiver wavelength need to match the mux/demux band exactly?

Each CWDM transceiver on the link must be tuned to one of the eight CWDM grid wavelengths within the selected band, one wavelength per direction for each of the 4 duplex data streams, since SCMD-4B passes light only within its plus or minus 6.5 nm passband around each channel center. Verify each transceiver's wavelength against the band selected for that SCMD-4B unit before installation.

Does SCMD-4B require a matching SCMD-4A at the far end?

Yes. SCMD-4B is the Side B half of a matched CWDM mux/demux pair with SCMD-4A. Both units are configurable across the same three wavelength bands, so order the SCMD-4A unit at the far end with the same wavelength band as the SCMD-4B unit at this end to complete the link.

Is the 1310 nm monitor port required?

No. The 1310 nm monitor port is an optional build choice that taps 1 percent of the signal at 23 dB insertion loss for in-service power checks. SCMD-4B operates normally without it, and deployments that do not need in-line power monitoring can skip the option.

What does the EXP expansion port do?

The EXP, or expansion, port is included on every SCMD-4B build, with no option to omit it. Confirm the intended role of the EXP port in the deployment before wiring it into the link.
