100G BiDi QSFP28 ER1 40km Transceiver (Side B) Overview

The BIDI-100G-Q28-SL42B is a 100G single-lambda BiDi QSFP28 transceiver for 40 km links over a single strand of G.652 single-mode fiber. It transmits at 1309.14 nm and receives at 1304.58 nm, the Side B direction of the matched pair, and connects through a single LC/UPC simplex connector. Side B operates only against Side A (BIDI-100G-Q28-SL42A), which uses the complementary wavelengths. Order one of each to build a complete 40 km BiDi link.

100G BiDi QSFP28 ER1 40km Transceiver (Side B) Description

The BIDI-100G-Q28-SL42B is EdgeOptic's 100G single-lambda BiDi QSFP28 transceiver for 40 km links over one strand of G.652 single-mode fiber. It is the Side B end of a matched pair, transmitting at 1309.14 nm and receiving at 1304.58 nm. A single LC/UPC simplex connector carries both directions on the one fiber, so the link plant uses a single strand instead of the two-fiber duplex pair a conventional LR4 module needs.

The module runs 100G Ethernet at 106.25 Gbps using PAM4 on a single optical lane per direction. The 40 km reach is 100G-ER1-40 per the 100G Lambda MSA, which extends the single-lambda 100G specification beyond the 2 km FR1 and 10 km LR1 reaches that IEEE 802.3cu defines. Host-side electrical signaling is single-lambda PAM4 per IEEE 802.3cu (CAUI-4). It carries 100G Ethernet only, with no Fibre Channel or OTN mapping.

Side B transmits on 1309.14 nm and Side A (BIDI-100G-Q28-SL42A) transmits on 1304.58 nm. Each end receives on the wavelength the other transmits, so the two close O-band lanes pass each other on the single fiber without colliding. You must deploy Side B against Side A. Two Side B modules on opposite ends both transmit at 1309.14 nm with neither receiver tuned to listen for it, and the link stays dark. Order one BIDI-100G-Q28-SL42B and one BIDI-100G-Q28-SL42A per link.

The EML transmitter runs at 0 to +5.6 dBm launch power, paired with a PIN photodiode receiver rated to −14.7 dBm sensitivity (min) and a −2.4 dBm overload. The 17.7 dB average link budget supports the full 40 km over G.652 fiber. FEC is integrated in the module DSP. Whether host-side FEC should be enabled or disabled is platform-dependent, so verify the host FEC mode against your switch platform's transceiver table before commissioning. The module reports DOM telemetry and runs at 4.5 W from a 3.3 V supply over a 0 to 70 degrees C range.

EdgeOptic codes the module for multiple vendor platforms configured for the 100GBASE-BX40 / 100G-ER1-40 single-lambda BiDi class. Verify the part against your chassis transceiver compatibility table before deployment.

Backed by 15+ years of EdgeOptic compatibility engineering across vendor optical platforms. Ships next business day from EU stock with a lifetime warranty. For coding requests or compatibility questions, contact our sales team.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 100G BiDi QSFP28 ER1 40km link need RS-FEC enabled on both switches?

FEC is integrated in the module DSP. Whether the host should also run RS-FEC, and which mode, depends on the switch platform, and a FEC-mode mismatch between the two ends is a common cause of a link that will not come up. Confirm both ends use the same host-side FEC setting and verify the required mode against each platform's transceiver notes before commissioning.

Can the Side B module link to a 100G BiDi module from a different vendor on the far end?

Interoperability is wavelength-based. The far-end module has to follow the same 100G-ER1-40 BiDi wavelength convention, which means the Side B module (TX 1309.14 nm / RX 1304.58 nm) must face a far-end Side A direction (TX 1304.58 nm / RX 1309.14 nm). When the wavelength pairing and the 40 km reach class match, the link works across brands. Verify the far-end wavelength pair and reach class before mixing vendors.
