16-Channel Double Fiber CCWDM Mux/Demux Overview

The DCMD-16 is a 16-channel double-fiber passive CWDM multiplexer/demultiplexer in a 19-inch 1U rack-mount chassis. It combines and separates 16 ITU-T G.694.2 CWDM wavelengths over a fiber pair (separate transmit and receive paths), with LC/UPC connectors throughout and insertion loss below 2.0 dB across the passband. Two wavelength plans are available, each covering all 16 channels at 20 nm spacing: 1271-1571nm and 1311-1611nm.

16 Channels Double Fiber Passive CWDM Mux/Demux Description

The DCMD-16 is a 16 channel double fiber passive CWDM mux/demux unit built for 1U rack mount deployment. It ships in one of two wavelength plans: DCMD-16-2757-U, covering 1271 to 1571 nm, or the default DCMD-16-3161-U, covering 1311 to 1611 nm. All 16 optical channels run at 20 nm spacing per ITU-T G.694.2, terminated on LC/UPC connectors. The unit uses CCWDM (Compact CWDM) free space filter technology.

Passband insertion loss is 2 dB, with a channel passband ripple of 0.3 dB across each channel's center wavelength window of plus or minus 6.5 nm. Isolation is 30 dB between adjacent channels and 40 dB between non-adjacent channels, crosstalk rejection figures rather than insertion loss. Directivity is 50 dB and return loss is 45 dB. Polarization dependent loss is 0.2 dB and polarization mode dispersion is 0.1 ps. Maximum optical power handling is 500 mW. Every DCMD-16 unit also includes a fixed 1% monitor port, tapping a small fraction of the line signal at 23 dB insertion loss for power monitoring without breaking the traffic path.

Operating temperature range is -5 to 70 degrees Celsius, with storage from negative 40 to 85 degrees Celsius and a rated MTBF of 1,000,000 hours. Compliance covers CE, ISO, ITU-T G.694.2 and RoHS. This chassis has no expansion port. All 16 channels are fixed at full capacity. For deployments that need to grow beyond a single 16 channel chassis, EdgeOptic's expandable DCMD-8 and DCMD-4 units, each with a built-in EXP expansion port, cover that requirement instead.

The DCMD-16 is available on a special order basis. For channel plan selection, volume quantities or expansion path guidance, contact our sales team.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which wavelength plan should I select, the DCMD-16-2757-U or the DCMD-16-3161-U?

The DCMD-16-3161-U is the default configuration and covers 16 CWDM channels across 1311 to 1611 nm. The DCMD-16-2757-U configuration covers 16 CWDM channels across 1271 to 1571 nm instead. Both plans use 20 nm channel spacing per ITU-T G.694.2. Select the plan that matches the wavelength range of the CWDM transceivers already deployed or planned for the link, since the two plans are not interchangeable channel for channel.

How much insertion loss does the DCMD-16 add to a link, and how should I budget for it?

The DCMD-16 has a passband insertion loss of 2 dB per pass through the unit. A typical point to point link uses one mux and one demux, so the two passes add roughly 4 dB before accounting for fiber attenuation, connector loss and any splices in the run. The isolation figures, 30 dB adjacent channel and 40 dB non-adjacent channel, describe crosstalk rejection between channels and are separate from this insertion loss budget. They are not additional loss to plan for.

Why does the DCMD-16 have no expansion port, and when should I use the DCMD-8HE or DCMD-4HE instead?

The DCMD-16 is a fixed 16 channel unit with no expansion port. It is built to run at full 16 channel capacity in a single 1U chassis rather than to grow incrementally. If a deployment needs to start with fewer channels and add capacity over time, EdgeOptic's DCMD-8HE and DCMD-4HE units are a different product family built for that expansion path. Choose the DCMD-16 when the full 16 channel count is needed from the start.

Which CWDM transceivers are compatible with each channel on the DCMD-16?

Each of the 16 channels has a center wavelength on the ITU-T G.694.2 20 nm CWDM grid, with a passband of plus or minus 6.5 nm around that center. A transceiver's specified CWDM wavelength needs to fall inside the passband window of the channel it connects to. Check the transceiver's datasheet or the switch platform's CWDM optics compatibility list to confirm which specific wavelength matches each port before ordering.
