Single Fiber DWDM OADM Overview

The SDAD-1-CFG is a passive single fiber DWDM optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM) for two sided East and West ring and point to point single fiber DWDM networks. The unit adds and drops one customer selected 100 GHz ITU-T C-band channel pair, from Ch.21/Ch.22 through Ch.59/Ch.60, onto or from a single fiber, while every other wavelength continues through the express port. Add and drop operation is bidirectional, applying on both the East side and the West side of the unit. Housing, channel pair, and window port are selected at order time. Housing is available in mini-LGX or LGX form factor. The channel pair is chosen from 20 available 100 GHz pairs spaced at 100 GHz (0.8nm). An optional 1310nm window port adds a tap for link and power monitoring without interrupting live traffic; this SKU does not include an EXP expansion port. The filter stage uses thin film filter (TFF) technology with a passband greater than 0.22nm. Passband insertion loss is as low as 1.2dB, rising to 1.5dB with the window port enabled. Isolation is 25dB on adjacent channels and 35dB on non-adjacent channels. The unit is fully passive, requiring no power or cooling, and operates from 0 to 70C with an MTBF rating of 1,000,000 hours.

1 Channel Single Fiber Passive DWDM Two side OADM Unit Description

The SDAD-1-CFG is a passive single fiber DWDM optical add/drop multiplexer for two sided East and West ring and point to point single fiber DWDM networks. It adds and drops one 100 GHz DWDM channel pair on a single fiber while all other wavelengths pass through on an express port. The unit carries one data stream, two optical channels, LC/UPC connectors, and requires no power or cooling.

Housing, channel pair, and window port are configured per order. Housing is available in mini-LGX or LGX form factor. The channel pair is selected from 20 available 100 GHz ITU-T C-band pairs spanning Ch.21/Ch.22 (1560.61nm) through Ch.59/Ch.60 (1529.55nm) at 100 GHz (0.8nm) spacing. An optional 1310nm window port adds a tap for link and power monitoring without interrupting traffic. This configuration has no EXP expansion port.

The filter stage uses thin film filter (TFF) technology with a passband greater than 0.22nm. Passband insertion loss is as low as 1.2dB, rising to 1.5dB with the window port enabled. Express channel insertion loss is 1.5dB, rising to 2.0dB with the window port enabled. Isolation is 25dB on adjacent channels and 35dB on non-adjacent channels, with 45dB return loss and 500mW maximum power handling.

Operating temperature is 0 to 70C, humidity 5 to 95 percent, with storage temperature of minus 40 to 85C and MTBF rated at 1,000,000 hours. The unit is CE and ISO certified, RoHS compliant, and built to ITU-T G.694.1. When cascading OADM nodes in a ring, consult the link budget for the specific node count. Frequently Asked Questions

Is the add/drop direction on this OADM reversible? Can the drop port also add?

Yes. Add/drop is bidirectional by design. The unit adds and drops the same 100 GHz channel pair on both the East side and the West side of the two sided OADM.

Why choose single fiber (BiDi) DWDM instead of dual fiber?

Single fiber DWDM carries the same channel capacity over half the fiber strand count compared with a dual fiber design, since one fiber carries add, drop, and express traffic in both directions. The tradeoff is that bidirectional optics are required at each end, and channel pair planning must account for both directions on the same fiber.

What does the optional 1310nm window port do?

The 1310nm window port adds a tap for link and signal power monitoring on the traffic path without interrupting live traffic. It is a monitoring tap only and does not add protocol or data rate capability.

What is the difference between the mini-LGX and LGX housing options?

The choice is a physical form factor difference that affects footprint and mounting density in a rack or patch panel. Consult the housing photos and dimensions on this page when planning rack space for either option.

How does enabling the window port affect the insertion loss budget?

Passband insertion loss rises from 1.2dB to 1.5dB and express channel insertion loss rises from 1.5dB to 2.0dB when the 1310nm window port is enabled. This loss adds up across every node the express path passes through in a ring, making it a key figure for link budget planning. Consult the link budget for the specific number of cascaded nodes in the ring.
