1000BASE-T Copper SFP Module Description
The 1000M-SFP-M is EdgeOptic's Gigabit-only copper SFP for SFP-equipped switches and routers that connect over 1000BASE-T copper. It runs a fixed 1000 Mbps over Category 5 or better twisted pair and terminates in a standard RJ45 connector, so it drops into a copper endpoint without an external media converter. The fixed-speed design separates it from tri-speed 10/100/1000 copper SFPs: this module runs 1000BASE-T only and does not fall back to 100BASE-T or 10BASE-T, so every device on the link must support Gigabit.
Reach is 100 meters over Category 5 or better UTP, consistent with the IEEE 802.3ab copper distance specification for Gigabit Ethernet, now Clause 40 of IEEE 802.3. The module is hot-pluggable, runs on a single +3.3V supply, and operates across the commercial 0 to 70°C range. Does the 1000M-SFP-M support 10/100 Mbps, or Gigabit only?
Gigabit only. The 1000M-SFP-M runs 1000BASE-T at a fixed 1000 Mbps and does not drop down to 100BASE-T or 10BASE-T. If a link has a 10 or 100 Mbps endpoint, use the tri-speed 10/100/1000 copper SFP (1000M-SFP-T) instead. Confirm every device on the link supports Gigabit before deploying this module.
Does the host switch or router need auto-negotiation enabled for a Gigabit copper SFP to link up?
The host port and the copper SFP have to be in a matching auto-negotiation state for the link to come up. A 1000BASE-T copper SFP carries an internal PHY that negotiates the RJ45 link. That negotiation is mandatory on 1000BASE-T even at fixed Gigabit; it resolves master/slave timing and duplex, not a drop to a lower speed. The host MAC has to sit in the same auto-negotiation state as that PHY. The exact setting is platform-specific, so check the switch or router documentation for its copper SFP auto-negotiation behavior rather than assuming a fixed value.
Does a copper SFP draw more power than an optical SFP?
Yes, modestly. A 1000BASE-T copper SFP runs an internal RJ45 PHY, so it draws more than a typical optical SFP, on the order of about 1 W (roughly 1.05 W typical and up to 1.20 W for the class) and up to about 375 mA versus around 300 mA for a standard SFP. That sits well within a normal SFP slot power budget. It is also far below the multi-watt draw of 10GBASE-T copper SFP+ modules, so this 1G module does not carry the slot or thermal restrictions those larger copper transceivers can trigger.
