The 100G CFP module is a hot pluggable form factor designed for optical networking applications. CFP is acronym from 100G (C = 100 in Roman numerals; Centum) Form factor Pluggable. As name suggests, CFP is introduced to serve as optical transceiver for 100G interfaces. 100G CFP optical transceivers are used by Internet Service Providers, Mobile Operators and Data Center globally. CFP was first form factor agreed by vendors in Year 2010 MSA (Multi Source Agreement) which could deliver 100 Gbps Ethernet data rate, then followed by CFP2, CFP4 and QSFP28. CFP was designed after SFP (small form-factor pluggable transceiver) interface where electrical connection of the CFP modules use 10×10 Gbps lanes in each direction (Tx and Rx) and optical connection support 10×10 Gbps for 100GBASE-SR10 and 4×25 Gbps for 100GBASE-LR4 and 100GBASE-ER4. As first generation 100G transceiver CFP Form factor is larger in size, requires higher power consumption, then for example latest generation QSFP28 form factor, which has become dominant 100G form factor in our industry, but still, CFP form factor is widely used in Cisco, Juniper, Huawei, Infinera, Ciena, Brocade, Alcatel (Nokia) and other industry well known manufacturer 100G equipment’s.
