16 Channels Single Fiber DWDM Mux/Demux A-Side Description
The SDMD-16A is the Side A unit of a single fiber (BiDi) 100 GHz DWDM multiplexer and demultiplexer built to the ITU-T G.694.1 frequency grid. It multiplexes and demultiplexes 16 DWDM channel pairs across Ch 21 to Ch 52 (1560.61 to 1535.82 nm) over one simplex single mode fiber, using separate wavelength sets for each direction so a single strand carries both directions of the link. The unit uses AAWG filter technology in a 1U rack mount chassis with LC/UPC connectors.
Passband insertion loss is 3.7 dB, adjacent channel isolation is 27 dB, and non-adjacent channel isolation is 35 dB, with 45 dB return loss and a 500 mW maximum power handling rating. As a passive optical component, the SDMD-16A is independent of data rate and protocol, so it works with any optical signal within its specified wavelength grid.
The SDMD-16A ships in two configurations that share the same optical path. One adds a window port that lets an operator check the line signal level without interrupting live traffic, and one omits it. Operating temperature is rated 0 to 70 C, with an MTBF of 1,000,000 hours, and compliance with CE, ISO, ITU-T G.694.1 and RoHS.
The SDMD-16A is the Side A half of a single fiber DWDM pair, designed to pair with a matching Side B unit for a complete bidirectional link. Confirm availability of the companion unit before specifying a full link. For lead time and configuration questions, contact our sales team.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the SDMD-16A need a matching Side B unit to complete a link?
The SDMD-16A is the Side A half of a single fiber (BiDi) DWDM pair. A single fiber DWDM link needs a matching Side B unit at the far end so each direction of traffic uses its own assigned wavelength set. Confirm current availability of the companion Side B unit with our sales team before specifying a complete link.
What does the 1310nm window port option add on the SDMD-16A?
The 1310nm window port configuration of the SDMD-16A adds a tap point that lets an operator check the line signal level with a test set while live traffic keeps flowing, without breaking the connection. The configuration without the 1310nm window port shares the same multiplexing and demultiplexing path but does not provide this tap. Choose the 1310nm window port configuration when in service power measurement matters for the deployment, and the standard configuration when it does not.
How does the wavelength assignment differ between the Side A and Side B units of a single-fiber DWDM pair?
In a single fiber (BiDi) DWDM pair, the Side A and Side B units are built with different wavelength assignments for transmit and receive, so both directions of traffic can share one fiber strand without colliding. Verify the exact channel to direction mapping for a specific Side A and Side B pairing against the product documentation before deployment.
