20 Channels Single Fiber DWDM Mux/Demux A-Side Description
The EdgeOptic SDMD-20A is a 20 channel, 40 wavelength single fiber passive DWDM multiplexer/demultiplexer built for Side A of a bidirectional single fiber pair. It uses 100 GHz DWDM AAWG (Gaussian) filter technology across the ITU-T C-band, spanning channels 21 to 60 from 1560.61 to 1529.55 nm, and combines or separates all 40 wavelengths onto a single strand of fiber.
Insertion loss stays below 3.7 dB across the passband, with adjacent channel isolation of 27 dB and non-adjacent channel isolation of 35 dB. Return loss is 45 dB and polarization dependent loss stays at 0.5 dB, keeping channel to channel performance consistent across the full C-band plan.
The unit ships in a 19 inch 1U rack mount chassis with LC/UPC connectors on every port. As a fully passive optical component, it requires no external power or active cooling and adds no electrical failure point to the link.
The window port is an ordering option rather than a fixed spec. Configurations without the window port ship as SDMD-20A-U; configurations with a 1310nm out-of-band window port ship as SDMD-20A-31-U, adding out-of-band monitoring access on the same fiber pair without disturbing the DWDM channel plan.
Single fiber DWDM operation requires a matched pair: this Side A unit must be deployed with a Side B unit, such as the SDMD-20B, at the far end of the link, since each side uses a reversed wavelength assignment for its transmit and receive channels. Mixing two Side A units, or two Side B units, on the same link will not pass traffic.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I order the SDMD-20A with or without the 1310nm window port?
The window port is a customer selectable option, not a fixed feature. When it is included, it adds a 1310nm out-of-band monitoring wavelength to the same fiber pair, separate from the 40 DWDM data channels, without disturbing the main channel plan. Configurations without it ship as SDMD-20A-U; configurations with it ship as SDMD-20A-31-U.
What is the difference between the SDMD-20A and the SDMD-20B?
Both are 20 channel, 40 wavelength single fiber DWDM multiplexer/demultiplexer units built on the same 100 GHz AAWG filter plan, but each side maps the ITU-T channel grid to opposite transmit and receive roles. The SDMD-20A and SDMD-20B are deployed as a matched pair, one on each end of the link, so that what one side transmits, the other side receives on the same fiber strand. Deploying two units of the same side on one link will not pass traffic.
