8 Channels Single Fiber DWDM Mux/Demux A-Side Description
SDMD-8A-CFG is a passive BiDi DWDM multiplexer and demultiplexer, Side A of a bidirectional single fiber pair, handling 8 data streams across 16 optical channels on one fiber strand. It uses thin film filter technology on the ITU-T G.694.1 100 GHz C-band grid, with LC/UPC connectors.
Channel spacing is 100 GHz with a passband greater than 0.22 nm. Insertion loss is 3.5 dB through the passband and 2.8 dB through the upgrade path. Isolation is 25 dB adjacent and 35 dB non-adjacent, with 45 dB return loss.
The unit is fully passive: no lasers, no active electronics, no firmware, and no external power required. Operating temperature is 0 to 70C at 5 to 95% humidity, with storage from negative 40 to 85C. MTBF is 1,000,000 hours, and the unit is CE, ISO and RoHS compliant.
SDMD-8A-CFG is configurable in three ways: housing (LGX cassette or 19 inch 1U rack), wavelength band (one of three preset channel groups on the C-band), and an optional 1310nm window port for out-of-band monitoring access. Every configuration also includes an EXP expansion port, connecting to another DWDM mux/demux unit to add channel groups onto the same fiber without new fiber runs, unlike the non-expandable SDMD-8A.
SDMD-8A-CFG is Side A of a bidirectional single fiber DWDM pair and pairs with a matching Side B unit, such as SDMD-8B, at the far end. The sides reverse transmit and receive wavelengths, so two Side A or two Side B units together will not pass traffic.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the EXP (expansion) port do?
The EXP port connects to the line or express port of another DWDM multiplexer and demultiplexer unit, adding further wavelength channel groups onto the same fiber pair without installing additional fiber runs. On SDMD-8A-CFG, the EXP port is included on every housing and band combination.
What is the difference between SDMD-8A-CFG (Side A) and its Side B counterpart?
SDMD-8A-CFG and a Side B unit, such as SDMD-8B, use reversed wavelength assignments for transmit and receive so that traffic passes correctly across the shared fiber pair. The two sides must be deployed together as a matched pair. Two Side A units or two Side B units at opposite ends of the same link will not pass traffic.
Which DWDM channel band should I choose?
SDMD-8A-CFG offers three preset 8 channel band groups on the ITU-T C-band 100 GHz grid: Ch.21 to 36, Ch.37 to 52, and Ch.45 to 60. Each preset covers a different slice of the C-band with its own set of 8 channel pairs. Check the datasheet channel plan for the exact wavelength of each channel before selecting a band.
Do I need the 1310nm window port?
The 1310nm window port adds an out-of-band monitoring access point on the same fiber pair without disturbing the DWDM channel plan. Whether it is useful depends on whether the deployment needs a separate monitoring access point alongside the DWDM channels. It can be included or left out when configuring SDMD-8A-CFG.
Does this unit need external power?
No. SDMD-8A-CFG is a fully passive optical device built on thin film filter technology. It has no lasers, active electronics, or firmware, and requires no external power to operate.
