16-Channel Single Fiber DWDM Mux/Demux B-Side Overview

The SDMD-16B is a 16-channel single-fiber passive DWDM Mux/Demux unit (Side B), multiplexing and demultiplexing 32 wavelengths across ITU-T C-band channels 21 to 52 (1560.61-1535.82 nm) on a 100 GHz grid over a single fiber. It uses AWG (Gaussian) filter technology in a 19-inch 1U rack-mount housing with LC/UPC connectors, and pairs with the SDMD-16A Side A unit to form a complete bidirectional single-fiber DWDM link. An optional 1310nm out-of-band window port is available.

16 Channels Single Fiber DWDM Mux/Demux B-Side Description

The SDMD-16B multiplexes and demultiplexes 32 optical channels across 16 duplex data streams on a single fiber, spanning ITU-T C-band channels 21 to 52 (1560.61 to 1535.82 nm) on a 100 GHz grid per ITU-T G.694.1. The unit uses DWDM AAWG (Gaussian) filter technology and terminates on LC/UPC connectors.

Passband insertion loss is 3.7 dB, with adjacent and non-adjacent channel isolation of 27 dB and 35 dB. Channel passband ripple is 1.2 dB, polarization dependent loss is 0.5 dB, polarization mode dispersion is 0.5 ps, and return loss is 45 dB. Maximum optical power handling is 500 mW.

As a single-fiber design, the SDMD-16B carries both directions of a duplex channel over one fiber, with the transmit and receive wavelengths reversed at the two ends of the link. Completing a bidirectional link requires a Side A unit built to the matching reversed wavelength plan, such as the SDMD-16A; confirm current availability with EDGE sales before specifying it into a design.

An optional 1310 nm out-of-band window port is available as a configuration choice, used for signal monitoring or link testing without interrupting live traffic on the DWDM channels. This SKU has no expansion port option. The unit ships in a 19-inch 1U rack-mount housing rated for 0 to 70 degrees C operating temperature and -40 to 85 degrees C storage, with 5 to 95 percent humidity tolerance and an MTBF of 1,000,000 hours. It is CE, ISO and RoHS compliant, built to ITU-T G.694.1 DWDM grid requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a matching Side A unit to complete the link?

Yes. The SDMD-16B is a single-fiber design, so the wavelengths assigned to each duplex channel are reversed between the two ends of the link. Completing a bidirectional link requires a Side A unit built to the matching reversed wavelength plan, such as the SDMD-16A. Confirm availability of the matching Side A unit with EDGE sales before specifying it into a design.

When should I choose the 1310nm window port option on the SDMD-16B?

Choose the 1310nm window port option when monitoring or testing the DWDM signal without interrupting live traffic on the multiplexed channels is required. It is a configuration choice on this unit, not a fixed feature.

What insertion loss does this unit add to my link budget?

The SDMD-16B adds 3.7 dB of passband insertion loss per pass through the unit; this figure applies directly to the link loss budget. The 27 dB adjacent and 35 dB non-adjacent channel isolation, 1.2 dB passband ripple, and 45 dB return loss are signal-quality specifications to account for separately, not additive loss terms.

How does the AWG filter technology in this unit differ from the thin-film (TFF) units elsewhere in the EDGE single-fiber DWDM line?

The SDMD-16B uses DWDM AAWG (Gaussian) filter technology, while the SDMD-8B sibling unit in the EDGE single-fiber DWDM line uses thin film filter (TFF) technology. Confirm which filter technology the deployment specifies before ordering, since the two use different underlying optics.
