8 Channels Single Fiber DWDM Mux/Demux B-Side Description

The SDMD-8B-CFG is EDGE Optical Solutions' 8 channel BiDi DWDM multiplexer and demultiplexer, Side B of a bidirectional pair. It combines 8 data streams onto 16 optical channels over a single fiber and pairs with the SDMD-8A-CFG Side A unit at the far end to complete the link. The unit is a passive optical component, so it needs no power or cooling and operates independently of protocol and data rate, carrying Ethernet, Fibre Channel, SONET/SDH or any other optical signal without modification.

Each of the 8 channel pairs runs on 100 GHz ITU-T C-band spacing (0.8nm) with a passband greater than 0.22nm, built on thin film filter (TFF) technology behind LC/UPC connectors. Insertion loss across the passband is 3.5dB, with 25dB isolation between adjacent channels and 40dB isolation between non-adjacent channels. Channel pass-band ripple is held to 0.5dB, polarization dependent loss to 0.1dB and polarization mode dispersion to 0.1ps. Return loss is 45dB, and the unit handles up to 500mW of optical power.

The SDMD-8B-CFG is a configurable product. Customers select a housing format, LGX cassette or 19 inch 1U rack chassis, a channel span, Channel 21 to 36, Channel 37 to 52 or Channel 45 to 60, each covering 16 wavelengths across 8 channel pairs in the C-band, and whether to add a 1310nm window port. Every configuration also includes a built-in expansion (EXP) port with SKIP filter design, letting additional DWDM channels be added onto the same fiber pair later. This port ships standard on every SDMD-8B-CFG build; it is not a customer-selectable option.

Operating temperature range is 0°C to 70°C, with humidity tolerance of 5% to 95% and a storage temperature range of -40°C to 85°C. Mean time between failures is rated at 1,000,000 hours. The unit is CE, ISO and RoHS compliant and meets ITU-T G.694.1 frequency grid requirements. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the SDMD-8A-CFG and the SDMD-8B-CFG, and do I need both?

The SDMD-8B-CFG is Side B of a bidirectional DWDM pair. Side A and Side B use complementary filter sets that separate the transmit and receive wavelengths onto a single fiber, so a working bidirectional link needs one SDMD-8A-CFG at one end and one SDMD-8B-CFG at the other end. Ordering two Side B units, or two Side A units, does not form a working link; the two ends of the link must be opposite sides of the pair.

How do I choose the correct channel span, Ch.21 to 36, Ch.37 to 52 or Ch.45 to 60?

The SDMD-8B-CFG ships in one of three channel spans within the ITU-T C-band, Channel 21 to 36, Channel 37 to 52 or Channel 45 to 60, each covering 16 wavelengths (8 channel pairs) on 100 GHz spacing. The correct span depends on which DWDM channels the rest of the link, including the matching SDMD-8A-CFG unit and any other multiplexers already on the same fiber, are using. Because the unit uses fixed thin film filters (TFF) tuned to each channel pair, the span is set when the unit is built and does not change afterward, so confirm the channel plan before ordering.

Can I add more DWDM channels later without replacing the SDMD-8B-CFG?

Every SDMD-8B-CFG includes a built-in expansion (EXP) port using a SKIP filter design. The EXP port allows additional DWDM channels to be added onto the same fiber pair later without replacing the mux/demux unit already installed. This port is standard on every configuration of this SKU, not a separate line item to add or omit. Consult the datasheet for the exact upgrade-path insertion loss and channel range through the EXP port before planning an expansion.

Should I choose the LGX cassette or the 19 inch 1U rack housing?

The SDMD-8B-CFG configuration includes a housing choice, an LGX-format cassette or a 19 inch 1U rack chassis. The LGX cassette fits into LGX-standard shelf systems already used for other passive optics, while the 19 inch 1U chassis is a standalone rack-mount unit that does not require an existing LGX shelf. Choose based on the mounting infrastructure already in place at the site.
