Cisco compatible GLC-BX-D Description

EdgeOptic's GLC-BX-D compatible is a Cisco-coded version of the EdgeOptic BIDI-1.25G-SFP-21-BD multi-vendor 1000BASE-BX-D BiDi SFP transceiver. The Cisco GLC-BX-D is Cisco's own ordering code for a single-fiber Gigabit Ethernet SFP carrying both directions over a single strand of single-mode fiber.

This side transmits at 1490 nm and receives at 1310 nm, pairing with a Cisco GLC-BX-U compatible that transmits at 1310 nm and receives at 1490 nm; two GLC-BX-D units will not link. The optical engine uses a DFB laser and PIN photodiode, spanning 1.063 to 1.25 Gbps with 430 to 500 ps/nm dispersion tolerance. Cisco rates the OEM part at approximately 10 km; EdgeOptic's compatible carries a 15 dB link budget supporting 20 km, a distinct EdgeOptic rating.

The transceiver is a hot-pluggable SFP with a single LC/UPC connector, built to the SFP MSA interface per INF-8074i. DDM reports transmit and receive power, bias current, voltage and temperature. Operating range is 0 to 70 degrees Celsius at 3.3V, with transmit power -9 to 3 dBm, receive sensitivity -22 dBm and receive overload -3 dBm. The module carries CE marking, Class 1 laser safety per FDA and IEC 60825-1, and RoHS compliance.

Do not confuse the GLC-BX-D with the GLC-2BX-D, a separate Cisco 2 km FTTx SKU, or the GLC-BX-D-RGD, a separate Cisco ruggedized SKU. The TN-GLC-BX-D is not a Cisco code; it is Lantronix's own compatible, formerly sold under the Transition Networks brand. Third-party SFP acceptance varies by Cisco chassis and software; verify the platform's transceiver compatibility matrix before ordering. Backed by 15+ years of EdgeOptic compatibility engineering, this module ships with a lifetime warranty. Pair it with the EdgeOptic GLC-BX-U compatible; contact our sales team for volume orders.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Cisco GLC-BX-D need to be paired with a GLC-BX-U?

Yes. The GLC-BX-D transmits at 1490 nm and receives at 1310 nm, so it must link to a Cisco GLC-BX-U compatible on the opposite end, which transmits at 1310 nm and receives at 1490 nm. Two GLC-BX-D units, or two GLC-BX-U units, will not establish a link. Use the EdgeOptic GLC-BX-U compatible as the matching far-end module.

Is the Cisco GLC-BX-D the same as the GLC-2BX-D, GLC-BX-D-RGD, or TN-GLC-BX-D?

No. Cisco publishes the GLC-2BX-D as a separate 2 km FTTx single-fiber ordering code, and the GLC-BX-D-RGD as a separate ruggedized ordering code; neither is interchangeable with the standard GLC-BX-D. The TN-GLC-BX-D name belongs to Lantronix, formerly Transition Networks, and is that vendor's own compatible product, not a Cisco part number at all. If a bill of materials calls out GLC-BX-D specifically, order this page's part, not one of the three above.

Will my Cisco switch accept a third-party GLC-BX-D compatible module?

Third-party SFP acceptance varies by Cisco chassis and software release. Verify the target platform's transceiver compatibility matrix before ordering to confirm the switch model and software version accept coded third-party optics.

Does the GLC-BX-D compatible reach 10 km or 20 km?

Cisco's own GLC-BX-D datasheet rates the OEM part at approximately 10 km. This EdgeOptic compatible is built to a 15 dB optical link budget supporting 20 km, per the underlying BIDI-1.25G-SFP-21-BD hardware design, distinct from the Cisco OEM rating.
